We had another appointment today, this time with a midwife.
She's measuring on the small side of normal, though this may have more to do with my torso being long than her actual size. This is a good sign from the hoping for a smaller than 10+ pound baby standpoint.
Her heartbeat is fine.
I finally got a chance to examine the label of the urine test strip bottle, which explains the test results. My results mean there was no protein or glucose detected, which is good (those would be signs of pre-eclampsia and diabetes).
They made me take the glucose tolerance test (testing for gestational diabetes). I figured that wouldn't be done till next month, since it's usually done around 28 weeks from what I understand (I'm 23 weeks along now). It was less than fun. I had to drink a bottle of flat coke tasting stuff, sit for an hour, and then give blood. The blood draw hurt significantly more than usual (my arm is still sore), and I think it gave me a hypoglycemic attack later at the grocery store. I hope this is normal (or I'm simply being a hypochondriac), and not an indication that I actually do have gestational diabetes. Anyways, I'm grumpy at them.
I don't know when I'll find out the results of that. Probably a month from now, at my next appointment.
Now we need to find and sign up for a childbirth class.

"She" is just preferable to "it" and less awkward than constantly repeating "the baby".
Normal... if you have Vandenberg blood
"...and I think it gave me a hypoglycemic attack later at the grocery store. I hope this is normal." Yup -- think we're all related. Your Mom & I as well as Moira all tend to be hypoglycemic (which can apparently lead to diabetes eventually) And a bit of a reaction after that big dose of glucola would be absolutely normal for any of us! Almost mandatory.:-) But very manageable w/ diet -- small frequent meals, complex carbs to keep your blood sugar even ... even Kaiser should be able to give you appropriate diet instructions. If you don't hear anything back it's probably normal -- most of my 1 hr P(ost)G(lucola)'s who get results significantly higher than 150 are back within the week for a 3 hour test, and even if those show Gestational Diabetes it's still just a matter of diet (no more cookies :-( Did your Mom have it w/ Nathan? Don't know that I ever asked, but that could've contributed to his huge size -- tends to show up oftener in 2nd babies, I think I've heard.
We should check and see if by any chance your mom still has the snugglie thing I made for you -- if not I just found the pattern and I'd be happy to turn my hand to another one for the Lemur if you think you'd like one (and IF I haven't forgotten how to sew and can dig the machine out from under Moira's frog!!) Something to think about ... There -- your advice for the week from the lab lady! Love you -- (Aunt)Marianne
Re: Normal... if you have Vandenberg blood
I think Nathan was just big because he was overdue, and I don't think he was all that huge - about 8.5 lbs or so. Not small, either, but I've been hearing about a lot of 10+ lb babies these days, especially from people trying to scare me! :) Mom hasn't mentioned anything about having GD with him.
I'd love a snugglie thing if you feel like making one! Thank you for offering!
