Speaking of crushes...
I had a crush on W before I met him. Not an Internet thing - he was a co-worker, and wrote a perl module I needed for our server. The comments amused me, and I fell in love.
Yeah, I know, I'm lame.
I met him shortly afterwards - found an excuse to go talk to him about the module - and it turned out he was both young (comparatively, anyways. There were few people in the office under 30 at that point. I actually have no idea how old he is, but probably around 30 now) and cute.
I obsessed over him for a while. I came as close as I ever have to asking someone out. He posted on Slashdot under his real name, and mentioned in an article on GnuCash that he was looking for an open source replacement for Quicken for his parents. It just so happened that the guy who wrote GnuCash was speaking at the local Linux user group that night, so I told him about it. He said he was busy.
Looking back, I should have just replied to the slashdot comment. Perhaps he would have gone if it hadn't been the me telling him about it. The real-life me, anyways. Not that it would have made a difference in the long run.
I found out he was in a serious relationship by reading slashdot, too. The highest rated comment on one article was from him, and it said something about how he was going to be a parent soon. Oops.
The stupidness of finding this information out via slashdot helped alleviate the depression.
About this time last year, I think. He and his family were at Border's, where I'm sitting right now typing this post. I was perhaps even in the same chair - I think so, because I remember his wife was using the book search computer, which is right behind me. Weird. His wife was pregnant, too. I'd guess five months along or so. We talked briefly about how big his first kid was getting. That was the last time I saw him before we moved.
I ran into him again at the grocery store the other day, just an hour or two after arriving in Davis. We said hi, and went our separate ways. Then I guess it clicked that I was carrying a baby, and he said "Oh, you have a little one." I said "Yes", and we once again went our separate ways.
I have a feeling I wrote this exact same entry when I saw them at Border's a year ago, but this dialup is too slow for me to go back and look.
