Dinner last night was "Tuna" salad wraps (with lettuce leaves for the wrapper), which was close enough that [livejournal.com profile] silkensteel figured out what it was supposed to be, and far enough that [livejournal.com profile] koyote liked it (he doesn't normally like tuna salad). I made it into sushi for lunch today,

These past two weeks have convinced me that raw food recipes are the most underrated part of vegetarianism, and tofu/tvp/whatever-based meat substitutes are the most overrated (though I like tofu for itself - just not as a meat replacement). Not that it exactly resembles meat, but it's vibrant and flavorful in a way that really works.

On the downside, I worry that Beeb is sensitive to nuts or something. She's spitting up an awful lot these days, and seems more gassy. My belly isn't reacting entirely well either, for that matter. We should probably be having more salad - right now we're in the "try lots of different things and win people over" stage.

Today we went and bought tickets for our trip to San Diego (we'll be there March 17-probably the 20th). We're trying a new route this time - Davis to San Jose on train, San Jose to San Luis Obispo on bus, and SLO to LA then LA to San Diego on train. It's longer than the central valley route, with a longer time on the bus, but it is, at least, new and different. It also seems to be cheaper.

Hopefully Leif will sleep a good portion of the bus trip.

After the train station, we stopped at the Mother & Baby store for a weight check - Beeb weighs 15lbs 13oz, putting her a bit above the 50th percentile for breastfed babies, which is where she's been since 2 months, and where Leif was for at least his first year. Then the SPCA thrift store, where we found Leif his "own size baby", 3 chapter books, and a Richard Scarry board book that makes annoying noises, all for $1.85. The books included The Shy Stegosaurus of Cricket Creek, which my mom read to me when I was little, and I was really surprised to find since I've never seen another copy and it's way out of print. Yay!

Leif asked for a carrier for his own size baby, so I made him a No-Sew ABC carrier, which would have taken about 10 minutes if I hadn't decided to put a pocket on it. It's totally adorable, and I need to take a picture of us with our babies in our carriers, but I can't now, because Beeb is sleeping and I have to leave for class in half an hour.

Two more things I meant to add...

Note to self: watermelon makes Leif wet the bed. This is something he rarely does, and mainly only when he is sick. He ate a ton of watermelon last night, and peed not once, but twice. This isn't an isolated occurance - it's happened other times we've eaten watermelon.

I think the on downside to having a kid stay dry through the night from a young age (4 months!) is that he never learned to deal with needing to go in the middle of the night.

I ran into my midwife (well, sorta - an OB attended me during labor, and neither of them was there for the birth, but she did all the postpartum care. I've also worked with her frequently as a doula) yesterday. She's apparently gone over to the dark side, aka. Woodland Hospital, which has recruited a bunch of awsome midwives away from Sutter over the past year or so. Apparently Sutter is understaffed and Woodland offers a better working environment.

This makes me sad. I have a lot of affection for Sutter, and Woodland seems less natural birth friendly, though that may not be true with all the cool midwives they now have.

I believe Sutter is the default for the county low income population due to it's affiliation with the community clinic (in addition to having a good reputation with natural birthers), and I wonder if this is related to the problems they're having. I can see that leading to increased demand and lower funding.

I hear toads croaking. It makes me happy :)

Davis peeps - there's a clothing swap/potluck dinner (bring your own plates and utensils) this Sunday (the 11th) at the Orchard Park Community Hall from 5-7PM. Bring clean, useable but unwanted clothing (men's, women's, kid"s, costumes, anything wearable). Take what you can use. Leftovers will be donated to the Med Center clothing drive.
