I dreamed I went to a pie shop and ordered a slice of avocado pie, despite not actually liking avocado in most settings. It was spiced similarly to pumpkin, and pretty good. Then I dreamed about trying to recreate it, including details about the stiffener (coconut oil, which, while awake, strikes me as a little too much fat). I suppose I have to try it now, though I think coconut oil will be the last resort.

I've wondered before why people don't make sweet stuff with avocado - it seems like it could make a good whipped cream type thing because of the fat content and creaminess. I've never been brave enough to try it, though.

Let us know how that turns out. :)

Alton Brown did. Ice cream and frosting.

* 1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust
* 2 avocados - peeled, pitted and pureed
* 1/2 cup lemon juice
* 1 (5 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk

DIRECTIONS

1. In a medium mixing bowl combine avocado, lemon juice, and condensed milk. Blend well and pour into graham cracker crust. Chill before serving. Garnish with whipped topping.

I'd use coconut milk and raw cane sugar stuff instead of sweetened, condensed milk. Some variants call for a bit of heavy cream, too. so a bit of coconut oil might be called for.

And, definitely, check this out

Interesting how close this version of coconut ice cream is to ours.

It's really common in Central/South America, actually. I don't like the taste of avocado enough to be into it, but I do like guacamole, so I'm thinking that the spices might work similarly to the guacamole spices in making it more palatable.

I guess we'll see.

It does work well as a base for chocolate pudding, but that's more of a disguised thing. I'll post a recipe once I get it perfect.

This one very specifically had spices, which is what made the dream interesting. I'm pretty sure I've seen avocado pie recipes before, and know I've seen sweet avocado recipes, but it just isn't a flavor I'm crazy about on it's own.

These apparently all "pass" for key lime.

The one recipe is so simple it's easy to see how adding a teaspoon of spices and cutting the lemon juice by 2/3 would work out

It might work, but I don't know if it'll be as firm. The chemistry of the combination of the SCM and lime juice is what does it; I think the experiment with coconut milk is worth trying.

Ahh, Alton Brown.

I don't have cable and I've never seen his show (or even really know who the heck he is) but it seems like anytime I want a recipe of any kind someone says "Alton Brown made that once.." :)

i bought an avocado in puerto rico (a smooth green-skinned kind, not haas) that was really sweet. i bet it would have made a good pie. it made mediocre (or maybe just weird?) guacamole on account of the sweetness.

He's good fun to watch. Occasionally he'll do something and we'll wonder what he was thinking but fort he most part he knows what he's doing and isn't annoying about it. (But don't listen to how he says to make omelettes and I've got a better pancake recipe than his which takes less effort. :-)
