So, by far the most common comment on the whole Korean Church deal is suggestions on how we can fix it ourselves.

If necessary, we will do this. However:

1. Any effective modification is likely to be nontrivial to install and remove. We rent. That means making serious modifications to one of two properties that we don't actually own.
2. We really cannot afford to spend large amounts of money.
3. The church is the one putting us at risk. It should be their responsibility to fix the problem, and we would like to encourage them to do so before investing our own money, energy, and potentially harming our relationship with our landlord and/or incurring legal liability on our part for modifying the church's property.

I really do not think you should be fixing this yourself at all. For what it is worth, what we would do is contact the police and ask if they have any sort of community policing program in place or someone you can meet with in person. At that meeting I would bring your photos and your beautiful little girl, and I think that would up the chances of getting a cop to go speak to someone at the church. Regardless of how that worked out I also would draft an official sounding letter saying this is the final written notification before you start legal proceedings against them for both their failure to fix the problem AND the two car accidents that have already happened as a result of criminal negligence on their part and make sure the delivery of this letter is recorded. Mention you will be seeking both criminal charges and civil restitution. Give them 60 days to fix the problem before you (say you) will file charges. After that I dunno, because actually filing charges and starting a law suit is a PITA, but the letter and the cop are both free on your part, its just the hassle of doing it.

As an interim measure I would put up flyers saying "Davis Korean Church Puts childrens lives at risk" along with your photos and dates and post them all around the neighborhood and on your fence, asking people to ask the church to do something. If you need me to I have someone who can translate into Korean for you.

I am SO sorry this is happening, I really want someone to kick their asses, what f*ckwits. I know this is the last thing you need to be dealing with now.

ITA with all this. Davis must have a community cop or police outreach programme of some sort.

Yeah, my idea wasn't entirely serious.

Maybe consult with a lawyer on wording, and put a big sign in english and korean notifying people of a $250,000 fee for crossing your property boundary? :D

Ok, that wasn't either. But it might work.

I agree with you 100% on this.

Is there any way to take it to the county? I'm sure there has to be some sort of code or SOMETHING that they aren't following. I saw the photos on the linked site on an entry before this one. It does not look safe at all.

If we need to, yes. We hope we can get the church to take care of it on their own first (and will invoke city codes in order to encourage them to do that).

sorry if you've already mentioned this, but is your landlord aware of the problem?

Yes. He doesn't really care as they're planning to tear down this house after we leave anyways, and as it isn't his liability issue, it just isn't really a priority.
