Nov. 15th, 2003 11:24 amI'm a bit confused as to how to pack for this trip.
We need clothing for 3 people for temperatures ranging from the 20's to the 70's, with the potential for rain and snow. Fortunately, the forecast so far isn't quite that extreme, but still, layers are good. I feel like I need to find some warmer pants for Leif to wear, since everything he has now is thin cotton.
We need diapers for Leif. This is an interesting problem, as we use cloth diapers, and at this point I really prefer cloth to disposables. However, I don't really feel like bringing along my complete stash of large diapers, the small diapers are really too small to use without a cover, I only have two covers (not really enough for full-time use, especially if I may have to go more than a day between washings), and I don't have time to order decent new ones. I also don't know if we'll have easy access to a washing machine in Davis.
I guess I could order them and have them shipped to somewhere along the way, but the safest place would be my mom's and by that time I'll be through with the part of the trip where I need them most.
I also need a larger bag for used diapers. The one I have is fine for a few hours, but too small for a whole day or longer. I'll probably just use a plastic trash bag or something.
We can buy our prefered brand of disposables in Davis, so that shouldn't be a problem.
But in any case, it feels like diapers will be taking up way too much luggage space. That's the problem with being half-assed about elimination communication - you need six million diapers with you at all times because you don't want to leave the baby in a wet diaper, but you're not good enough at it to significantly cut down on the number of diapers needed. In fact, you need more than the average person who has never heard of EC, since you're not leaving the baby in the same diaper for hours.
We need various forms of travel entertainment for both babies and adults, since we have a lot of long plane flights and train rides. Christof will be bringing his computer for work. I'm not sure if I should bring mine. Maybe I'll bring my old laptop - my mom mentioned wanting to buy it off of me, and I'll mainly need it during the first part of the trip (before my mom's house) anyways.
koyote says I have to bring my laptop, because I may as well just have a desktop if I'm not going to bring it anywhere. He's probably right that it's safer with me than staying here.
I think I may do ebooks, so I don't have to carry around 300 paper books as I usually end up doing. fictionwise.com has a lot of recent books, some for really low prices (and some are ridiculously expensive, considering publication cost is low).
I'd also like to get a few DVDs - if we have laptops with DVD players we may as well make the most of it, and most of what we have now isn't that great for Leif. That's not really that much space, though, since I can stick them in a CD travel case.
Toy-wise, Leif will probably be happy if I bring along a bunch of his gymni toys. He's not all that into diversity, anyways.
We'll also need his sling, car seat, and some blankets. We need to learn how to get his car seat into a car properly (we've never actually used this particular seat in a car). I guess we should probably bring the manual.
Plus I have some stuff of my mom's that I need to return. I wonder if I can even find her large embroidery hoop.
It almost seems like it could be easier to bring the stroller to carry stuff, since we're bringing so much already, but probably not. It's awfully bulky.
Thank God I don't have to worry about bottles and all.
I'm still trying to arrange a petsitter. I don't think we have any firm plans on where we're staying the Bay Area, or when exactly we'll be there.
I had a dream the other night that we somehow forgot to bring anything with us. I bet I have a dream within the next few nights that we're trying to leave the house to go to the airport, but keep getting sidetracked. I always have that dream before traveling.
If anyone in the Bay Area or Southern California is interested in getting together, please tell me so we can finalize our schedule. The Bay Area is the main part that's up in the air. We get in Thursday the 20th, early enough that doing something in the afternoon or evening isn't entirely out of the question.
koyote is working on Friday. We're heading to Davis somewhere between Friday morning and Sunday morning (I may leave before
koyote, depending on whether anyone in the Bay Area is desperate to meet Leif. I'll be in Southern California Dec. 1-6.

Date: 2003-11-15 10:49 am (UTC)Have someone buy a cheap umbrella stroller (and if possible, meet you at the airport with it.) Leave it behind (donate, or have a friend toss it in the garage) when you return.
When I travelled, I nearly always used disposables. I'd bring only as much as I needed for 24 hours, then buy ASAP upon arrival.
I can make a weekly check on the cats, but I'm not close enough to go every other day (a minimum, IMO, to keep the cats from getting pissed.)
