Definetly a Monday

In which I discuss online diaries, school, Mondayness, cell phones, and netscape annoyances.
Online diaries - exhibitionism at it's finest.
Unfortunatly, I know that at least one of my co-workers will be reading this, and he knows who I am (Hi Andrew!), so the anonmity that you'd usually expect from an online diary is slightly lacking. Which means I can't bitch about my job in detail. Or my sex life. Sorry guys :)
So, I'll spare you all my job rant, even though it's the most emotionally consuming portion of my life at the moment.
I'm sitting here looking through the catalog for the local branch of Sacramento City College, debating what I should take. I intended to take some sort of math and an introductory class in chemistry - two subjects I neglected in high school and am discovering that I may want a better grip on when I go back to "real" college. Unfortunatly, when I planned this, I thought I'd have my driver's license by the time class starts, and it just doesn't look like that's going to happen. Which means I pretty much have to take classes at the local center, and they don't have nearly the selection that the other branches have, including no chemistry or decent CS courses (everything at our branch is "Using Word" or "Using PowerPoint" or other such introductory uselessness. I need introductory uselessness that's slightly more advanced than that :).
So, I must decide which math to take. I'm debating between Intermediate Algebra, Trigonometry, and Precalculus. I took both Algebra I/II and Trig in high school, but don't feel I got nearly as good a handle on either as I should if I plan on continuing on to calculus. But will I be able to handle a class that's complete review? And do I really need to take Algebra II a fourth time? :) So, either Trig or Precalc, and I'm leaning towards Precalc, since I still have all the materials from the Trig course and can review on my own if necessary.
And I guess Chem can just go on hold until summer. Math is a 5 unit class, anyway, and I'm not sure I want try to juggle a full time job and nearly full time school quite yet.
On the good side, classes don't start until January 16th, leaving plenty of time for me to go home after Christmas (Why Christmas Sucks this year is the subject for another time).
I went to a high school that really looked down on community college. But honestly, the class I'm taking right now is the absolute best class I've ever taken. The class size is small, the teacher actually wants to teach, and the students seem to actually want to be there. I can't say that about any of the classes I took at the University I was attending. Of course, it's only one class - all the others may be awful. I'm also in a college town, so most of the students are either concurrently enrolled at the University or planning on transfering to it. So YMMV.
Anyway, school was not the original subject of this entry. The original subject I intended to write about was why this was a very stereotypical Monday, but my roommate handed me the college catalog and I got distracted. Getting distracted was pretty much my modus operandi of the day. I had an obnoxious sequence of events at work due to that.
I got to our office on campus, and decided to go pick up some lunch. So I get my jacket and backpack and leave. About two minutes later, I realize that I forgot my wallet. So I head back to pick up my wallet. I find it and leave again, get about the same distance away, and realize that I forgot my keys.
Now, forgetting my wallet was an annoyance. Forgetting my keys was a disaster, as the door is self locking. As luck would have it, the only other person in the building with a key to that room had *just* left (probably within the past minute - I'd talked to her less than 5 minutes before) for a doctor's appointment and wouldn't be back for an hour. So, I had to go call facilities services to get it unlocked. Luckily, they're quick.
That's what I mean about it being a stereotypical Monday... for another example, see my underwear rant elsewhere.
I've been leashed. Yes, work has given me a cell phone. Oddly, it's supposedly for my own protection - my boss gets nervous that I walk home after dark. The cynical side of my mind says that I'm being gradually dragged into the evil world of On Call. The even-more-cynical side of my mind says that I'm interested in system administration, so being dragged into that world is unavoidable, and I may as well enjoy the geeky thrill of having a new toy while I'm still allowed to turn it off. Actually, my boss is great in the human respect, and probably does have pure intentions with this thing.
Netscape sucks. I spent an hour writing a response to that guy who posted a story about whether or not to go to college, only to have netscape suddenly decide to eat up all memory and crash approximatly one paragraph from the end. You'd think I'd learn not to use netscape to compose long essays. (No, I'm using an editor right now. I'm not going to let netscape ruin my evening twice in one night). Another netscape annoyance - ctrl-x apparently cuts, but doesn't give you any way to paste.
Anyway, that's quite enough for now.
