We're in the process of looking for a futon, as our current bed is an Aerobed. While comfy for an air mattress, it isn't ideal long term.

There are two stores in downtown Davis selling futons (both of which are new since I was last here). I went in Store 1 briefly when I first noticed it, Store 2 yesterday, and then back to Store 1 today.

The salesman greeted me, and commented that I was back again. I said yes, and told him what we were looking for. He said, "Oh, you were in the other store yesterday!"

He was the same salesman from Store 2. Though I think he was the same salesman I saw the first time I checked out Store 1, too.

He said that the prices were the same. I turned towards the window to point to the Grand Opening sale sign, to ask if that would make any difference, except now the sign was a Going Out of Business Sale sign.

"Wait, weren't you just having a Grand Opening sale?"

Apparently they opened a month or two ago, but business had been going badly (I can't imagine that there's really enough demand for futons to support two stores within two blocks of eachother.

Anyways, the two stores carry the same products and charge the same prices, except that Store 1 is 25% cheaper due to the sale. I guess that's where we're going.

It was quite the odd conversation, but I guess you had to be there.

ETA: We're looking for an actual honest-to-god sleep on it every night type futon, not something for a couch or guest bedroom. We're also not broke. Therefore, we are looking for a good deal on a new futon, not looking around for a free one that someone is getting rid of (which, in a college town like this, is almost certainly going to be rather low-end in quality).

Incidentally, I did find one of the low-end futons out by a trash can. I have no doubt I can find another if for some reason we do end up needing to :)

it's pretty close to the end of the semester, so you may have very good luck when the kids move out and either throw out their stuff or sell it for a loss to get rid of it.

For general furniture...sure. For a bed? No.

Actually, I shouldn't say that, as we previously got a mattress out of a trash can.

Not that close to the end of the semester here, though. UCD goes by the quarter system, not semesters.

More and more schools do, it seems. When I started college in the '90s the trend was to semesters and away from quarters. Now it's back.
