He had figured out how to open the unlocked door the night we moved in, and how to flip the deadbolt within a few days, but didn't put the two actions together in the correct order for about a week more.
We were prepared, though. We bought a chain lock, and had it installed within ten minutes of the first time he managed to figure out the whole thing. Now he just throws his toys through the crack in the door and gets upset when we won't open the door to get them because he'll run outside.
The back door has the same locking mechanism, but so far he just ignores it, probably because we don't normally go out that door.
