We really have a pretty neat backyard for kids now. Leif has a homemade two story playhouse and a sandbox, and we have a big inflatable pool currently filling. And ducks, too.

The ducks don't like the weather. They sit in their house and pant until I come out and spray them with the mist setting on the hose. Then they come out and do ducky stuff until they decide they're too hot again. Their yard is more shaded now that it's afternoon though, and they seem much happier. I hope this is just because they're still basically ducklings, and that they'll regulate their temperature better before the real heat hits. We'll also have a better pond set up for them by that point.

I find it amusing that we were worrying about them being too cold just the other day. Though the wild temperature swinging (two cold and rainy days followed by several hot dry days. Repeat.) may be part of the problem.

We expanded their yard today. They had about 6x6 feet, including their house, until they adjusted. Now they have about 10x10, and seem very happy. We may expand it some more eventually (and give them supervised free run of the yard once the fence is finished), but for now this seems perfect. They're pecking away at bugs in the grass, and I've watched them go through two liters of water in the past 20 minutes. I think that waterer may go to the cats (the ducks have a big bucket of water as well).

As soon as we pick up Mariel from school in about half an hour, we're having feeding time.

Beeb is enchanted by the ducks, and will stare at them for a long time. Of course, the same is true of the rest of us. Right now she is trying to chew on Leif and pull out his hair. Ah, how cute :)
