I'm sick of wiping up spit-up and changing diapers.

Leif fell asleep at this time (uh, 8:30, not the time I actually end up posting this) yesterday. I got to watch a movie not aimed at young children, which I haven't done in months (The Village, which I've been wanting to see since it came out. Now I just need to see Rent and Serenity and I won't feel all movie-deprived anymore). Why couldn't this happen again tonight?

I realized yesterday that we're supposed to bring snack for church tomorrow. Oops. This means I get to throw together a bunch of chocolate chip cookies that I can't eat. Joy! (Gonna have to happen in the morning, because the butter needs to thaw)

Aren't I whiny?

Astrid was having a lot of fussies, gas, and infrequent poops (every 2-3 days. Not unusual for a healthy breastfed baby, but not really for one so young, and she seemed uncomfortable). Her poop was also mucusy, not curdy, and not green, but kind of green tinged and not really the normal mustard color, either. All of this combined pointed most strongly to dairy allergy.

I stopped dairy on Monday, Nov. 6. She didn't show any real improvement during the first week, which doesn't necessarily indicate anything, as it can take up to two weeks for all the milk protein to get out of our systems.

I stopped caffeine on Sunday, Nov. 12 because she seemed so miserable and I didn't want to wait another week to stop it (so I could more clearly see whether the problem was dairy or caffeine) if it was the culpit.

On Thursday, Nov. 15th she started pooping a bunch. Unfortunately, so did I, since I was sick at the time, so it's likely that was the problem for her, too. However, she's been pooping more regularly since - not as much as on Thursday, but several times a day. It's still not what I'd call normal breastfed baby poop. Pooping seems easier on her - she's not all red-faced anymore. But I can't say for sure that this isn't just an aftereffect of what we both had.

She continues to spit up a lot (as she has since my milk came in), but seems a lot less uncomfortable and fussy in general.

Slip-ups:
- The Doritos I mentioned previously. I had one bit of gouda cheese curd in a moment of weakness, a chocolate chip cookie that undoubtedly had milk in the chocolate chips, and I didn't check the ingredients on commercial bread on the 3 or so occasions I had it. Today I ate the remainders of Leif's egg and cheese sandwich because I hate wasting food and it looked really good. Overall, I expect I had less dairy in the two weeks than I do in a day or two normally, but if she's super sensitive, it could still be a problem.
- I continued to eat chocolate (though only non-dairy, except for that chocolate chip cookie, so I was eating less of it than normal), so I wasn't avoiding caffeine entirely.

Other possibilities:
- Wheat, chocolate, oat, or soy allergy (or something else, those are the most common allergens that I can think of that I eat often enough to be more than an occasional issue).
- Early teething (she has a litttle sharp spot on her gum, and likes chewing on stuff. Hasn't reached the drool from hell stage yet, though)
- Intestinal flora imbalance from the antibiotics during birth (I've heard this causes non-curdy poop). Trying an probiotic supplement wouldn't hurt anything.
- It's just the way she is, and any fluctuation in symptoms is caused by normal growing changes, and I'm being a hypochondriac. (I'm guessing this may be the case with the spitting up).

Weird things:
- I had a major salt craving on Wednesday. This has never happened before that I can remember. The web says this indicates thirst or a trace mineral deficiency. A friend I was chatting with told me she gets salt cravings before getting a cold. [livejournal.com profile] koyote said he'd also had salt cravings the day before he got sick when I mentioned it to him. So, while I originally thought this might be related to the diet changes, it was probably just a pre-sickness thing. (I ate seaweed, figuring that was the healthiest and most nutritious way to satisfy the craving. It was yummy)
- I didn't notice much in the way of caffeine withdrawal symptoms, which I normally do. I had a bad headache Wednesday evening, but I think that, again, that was related to getting sick rather than caffeine, since it seemed awfully delayed for a caffeine headache.

Going to stick with both for a while longer. It's healthier that way, even if neither is an allergy issue. I think I need to be more anal about the dairy, and do some sort of food/Astrid-status tracking so I can more easily see if dairy seems to be a problem when I decide to challenge it.
