I'm not feeling well. I was nauseous most of the night and have had other digestive issues. I think Beeb has it, too, for reasons I'm just not going to discuss. Normally I wouldn't have even tried to go to aikido, but it was the first day of the new quarter, when we're all supposed to show up to show our support or whatever, and I wasn't feeling too horrible, so I went.

While I was trying to get ready, Beeb was nursing and just would not go to sleep. It was getting later and later, and she just kept nursing, so finally I handed her off to [livejournal.com profile] koyote so I could get going. So I was running late, but rushed (realizing on the way that, being Monday, I had weapons after class and had forgotten my boken) and got there right at 4:30, only to discover that no one else was there yet, and the mats weren't out. Sensei was going to be horribly angry when he got there, what with it being the first day of class and him having given us all a big lecture about that at the start of last summer session. So I hurried to get the mats out, which is really a 2+ person job, and which I've never done by myself before, so I kind of screwed up before getting it right.

About halfway through, a new student (actually, an old returning student from several years ago, but who I hadn't met before) showed up, and expressed surprise that the mats were out. I wondered what all he was on, and told him I worried about getting through it all before sensei showed up. He said "Really, sensei gets here this early now? I thought he didn't show up before 5:30." I said he usually showed up around the time we finished warmups, but I couldn't imagine we'd get the mats down before then. Then it hit me what he'd said, and I realized that, on Monday, class doesn't start until 5:30. Oops!

So we got the rest of the mats out, and a senior student showed up and sent me home so I wouldn't give her my cooties. She asked if I was feverish (am I? I don't think so. I've been awfully cold all day, but the weather has also been comparatively cold much of the day), and thought maybe I should go to the doctor because I've been sick with similar illnesses on a few occasions lately. I assured her that no, this is just what it's like to be a parent, and it's definitely contagious stuff going around the playgroup. She assured me that she'd tell sensei that I made the effort to be there and get the mats out and all.

Oh, and it wasn't the first day of the new session either, but my misunderstanding on that was because I was told otherwise and didn't double-check, not because I'm delirious and sleep-deprived.

An explanation of my icon, in case anyone is curious, with some discussion about book 7.

Ages ago, well before HP7 was released, this post in [livejournal.com profile] aikido proposed that Harry defeats Voldemort using the aikido move iriminage, in which the hand of the nage (the person executing the technique) is held in a position similar to the one Harry's in the US cover art. This amused me greatly, and consequently, iriminage is now the only move whose name I can consistently remember.

Now, if you have read the book, you undoubtedly realize that Harry did not actually defeat Voldemort using iriminage, so the icon itself is not a spoiler. However, it could be argued that he defeated Voldemort using aikido. The description from our dojo website says "Aikido resolves the problem of violence through the application of an effective but non-violent methodology that neutralizes the energy of any attack without injury or destruction."

So [livejournal.com profile] joxn wasn't far off, really.

(Which isn't to say that the concept of nonviolent conflict resolution is unique to HP and aikido, as it obviously isn't.)

Hope you are feeling better. Seems that same stuff is floating around Kansas. I came home with that same stuff after visiting Mom's this weekend. It passed from Grandma to my niece then to my sister and nephew then to me and Mom. Not fun.

Yeah, I've heard of it all over the state here. I'm actually doing pretty well - I don't think it's hit me nearly as bad as some other people.

My brain just obviously isn't quite up to par.
