Has there ever actually been a case of a stranger tracking down and doing something harmful to a child as a result of their parents posting their picture online?

Hmm. I don't personally know of any cases like that. I do know of many cases were childen themselves were using the internet and as a result became victims of internet sexual predators.

Yeah, I'm not doubting that happens. In fact, I had someone offer to send me bus tickets when I was 16, and I'm pretty sure he didn't have pure intentions.

Someone wanted to take me to India to meet his family when I was around that age.

I don't know of any cases like that. I think what is far more common and likely is the picture is copied (stolen/whatever) and doctored for kiddie porn.

I had a partner whose job included website maintenance at an elementary school. They had lots of concerns about children involved in a custody dispute or who may have restraining orders against someone. As a result, there were policies about not sharing information on what students were in what grades or classrooms, or including photos where the children could be identified. Presumably parents know whether or not this situation applies to them.
