There are some marks on my desk. They look like an indentation left by the bottom of a box or keyboard or something.

Kind of like this:

| o |
|__ __|

Astrid looks at it and says, "L.... O... L...!"

At which point I LOL.

Then she says, "L... O... L... spells lollipop!"

My child is figuring out phonics. Or turning into a lolcat. Or both.

This is exactly why I'm beginning to think that Leif's slowness may not just be that I'm incompetent.

Well, I could have told you that! Little boys usually develop language and reading skills later than little girls. Not always, but usually. Add to that each child as an individual, so Astrid might be developing in this area early for a girl and Leif may be developing a little slower for a boy, and you could have a tremendous discrepancy. But neither is really an indication of your parenting, what kind of student they will be, or what level of intelligence they will have in later years. From everything I've read, it looks to me like your kids are in very good hands.
