Dec. 19th, 2003 07:56 pmI'm feeling a little like Margaret right now, debating whether to take classes at the YMCA or the Community Center (though not the Jewish one).
The class at the community center meets twice a week for 25 minutes, while the class at the YMCA meets once a week for 30. They both meet for 8 weeks.
In terms of transportation, they're about equal. The community center is closer to the bus stop than the yoga class was, and that was tolerable. The bus stop is right outside the YMCA, but requires a transfer.
They have the same requirements in terms of diapers (swim diapers covered by plastic pants).
The community center is probably more age appropriate, since it's for 6-18 months, while the YMCA class is for 6-36 months.
A friend from yoga class is going to be doing the community center class.
Cost is a little tricky...
The community center costs either $58 or $63, depending on whether I'm considered a Herndon resident or not. The YMCA class costs $45 if I'm a full privilege member, $85 if I'm a program member.
Full privilege membership costs $82-$94 per month, depending on what I'd qualify for. We'd probably go for the $94 one - it isn't that much more expensive, and allows
koyote to go, too. The program fee is an annual fee of $70.
A 25-use pass to the community center is $70 or $100. If I manage to go twice a week (which is questionable, given that I'd have to find someone to take care of Leif), that would last me about 3 months. Or I could just sign up for one of the classes, which would be about an equivalent cost, and would probably get me there more often.
Full Privilege YMCA membership includes access to a bunch of classes (including a mom and baby class) for free, as well as the gym/pool/etc.
It also includes the most important part - free childcare. That means that I could actually go there without having to find someone to take care of Leif. The community center only provides childcare for children over a year old.
Of course, I could always do the swim classes at the community center and stuff for me at the YMCA. In that case, I could get an individual membership for $75 per month, or even a "Young Professional" membership for $56.25. (It's possible I could do that anyways - I'd have to check on what kind of membership is needed for the baby swim classes)
Another option for me-stuff is Gold's Gym, where
koyote currently goes. It's easy walking distance (and if it's too snowy to make walking appealing, the bus goes right there, though I'd feel dumb taking the bus a few blocks to the gym). I believe Leif is old enough for childcare there. They also have membership trades, where I could work at the childcare center in exchange for membership (it's also a possibility for a part-time job, if I could bring Leif along). Depending on how that works, it could be cool. Gold's does not have a pool at the closest location, though apparently they do at the next closest one. That's important. I love swimming, and a pool might actually convince me to go.
A week before I left Davis, I discovered that 24 hour fitness had an indoor pool. That annoyed me greatly. I would have gotten a membership if I'd known.
In any case, I guess I'll go ahead and sign up for the community center swim class. Even if I end up going with the YMCA, I think the community center swim class is worth the few extra dollars for the twice a week classes and built-in friendship. Which means I should also go ahead and order a swim diaper. Except I should probably ask first to make sure they allow cloth swim diapers.
I'm lusting after baby stuff. Clothing, diaper stuff, carriers...
I'd really like to get some kind of carrier that distributes the weight a bit better than the sling. Both slings I have now hurt my back after about twenty minutes. We got a baby backpack while on vacation, but it's a baby carrier, not a babywearer. There's a difference.
I should wait until after Christmas and see what he gets.
I should go ahead and buy a swim diaper soon, though. Classes start Jan. 5, and if I don't have a cloth swim diaper by that point, I'll have to buy disposables. Actually, the community center class says you can use cloth diapers with a cover, but that seems like it would be awfully bulky. But if it's only for a class or two...
I'm also lusting over classes for myself.
I'd like to do martial arts again, and there's a bunch of places around here where I could do it. I'd really like to do karate or something again, but it might be better if I got in better shape first.
I have this vague idea that it might be fun to teach yoga for handicapped kids. But that pretty much requires taking yoga classes first.
The community center has an adapted aquatics program on Friday afternoons that needs volunteers. I'd love to do that.
Really, I'd just like something of my own. Something that gets me out of the house, away from the baby, and around other adults. And an exercise class would have the added bonus of getting me to do physical activity.
But there's the transportation issue, the money issue, and the childcare issue. The last is probably the most difficult to overcome.
koyote's work schedule is unpredictable enough that I can't rely on him on a regular basis, and I don't really feel that Leif is old enough to leave him with a babysitter yet. Not to mention he refuses to drink formula (smart kid). I haven't tried expressed milk or a sippy cup instead of a bottle yet. Maybe one of those would work.
If I had my choice, I'd do the adapted aquatics, and then stay at the community center for the karate class they have Friday evenings. But that would mean being gone from like 4:00 - 9:00 (including transportation time), and that's just way too long. We could make it work if we really wanted to (have
koyote bring Leif down for eats in between classes or something), but it would be a lot of work, and it would tie up Friday night, when we usually go out and do something. We'll see.
I have $8.25 in invite code coupons. Maybe I'll use it to buy a paid account for
lemurbaby, so that he can make a phone post and everyone can hear the adorable noises he makes. When a paid account expires, are the phone posts still accessible?

That's what Leif says.
Now I must eat.
