I finally finished that diaper I started a month or so ago.

It turned out better than I had expected.

Problems:

  • Legholes need to be bigger, or elastic needs to be longer, or both (probably both).
  • Side flaps in back need to be longer. Possibly shorter in front and quite a bit longer in the back.
  • The front sags open a lot. I'm not certain how to fix this beyond just putting more snaps and fixing the problems already mentioned. Perhaps I need to use velcro until I get the sizing worked out.
  • If I do continue to use snaps, I should put them in place before sewing it up, so that the metal is inside the fabric instead of against the skin. This isn't any more difficult, just requires some planning ahead. I also need to find a better brand. These don't stay together very well.
  • It's awfully bulky. Part of this is the pattern, part is because the soaker pad is too thick. It might make a decent nighttime diaper. I'll have to see. So far, he hasn't peed in it at all because having a brand new diaper is motivation to be good about EC :) I don't know how much I'll be able to do about this with the terrycloth we have around the house.
  • Perhaps add an extra layer of flannel on the inside to make it prettier. If I do this, \

I made it following the directions here.

Next - another carrier. We couldn't find any decent webbing, so I'm going to make straps, but I think I'll still have them cross in the back like the packababy. Hopefully we got enough canvas last time that I can make the straps out of one long strip each, rather than sewing two (or more) smaller strips together. I doubt it, though. I guess it depends on how long I make the straps - they're really excessively long now. I'm not sure how much shorter I can make the shoulder straps if I want it to keep working for several years, but the waist tie wraps around me twice.

On the other hand, wrapping around twice may provide more support. I'm not sure.

Oh well, not like I can't make another if this one doesn't work out.

I got some nice tea-dyed muslin for this one. I'm thinking I'll use two layers on the inside (between baby and the straps), and one on the outside with a fishy panel, mainly for decoration, since the weight is on the straps. I'm not sure if this will be considerably cooler than the canvas or not, but I don't think that just one layer inside would be sturdy enough.

Perhaps I'll skip the outside layer. It's a considerable amount more work, which might not be worth it for an experimental design (makes it very hard to play with the strap angle, for one thing). Plus, I'm wondering if it may not look too cluttered with a different body color, strap color, and panel (same strap color isn't an option unless I do the straps out of muslin, which I don't want).

I also need to make the shoulder padding extend further on this one, as it helps keep the straps from getting all wrinkled up.

1. If you want to use plastic snaps instead, I have a snap press and can put snaps on for you.

2. Putting snaps on beforehand ends up with it pulling and bunching, so not sure it's worth it to do it beforehand.

3. Try doing the snap-in soaker type of diaper or a pocket diaper and you won't have problems with dry times in the dryer.

4. Elastic in the front can help with the gapping problem.

5. If you're going to use metal snaps, instead of using the metal caps, use the rings, less metal against the skin.

6. White flannel on the inside, cotton prints on the outside, look better longer than flannel everywehre.

1. I might take you up on this.

3. That's an idea. I'm sure this one I made will take forever and a day to dry.

5. That's what I have, so it isn't too much of a problem.

6. We have tons of flannel lying around the house that's just going to get thrown away if we don't use it. I'm not too concerned about looks (it's a diaper, after all), but the stitching around the soaker pad looks really ugly. I suppose I could just get better at sewing :)

And I can't remember now what the rest of that one line was supposed to say. oops.
