ocelotA hit and run accident took place about 20 feet from me today. I'd just crossed the street, and stopped to look at a newspaper headline (the one about the potential for a bioterrorism attack against the milk supply), when there was a big crash behind me. Without even thinking about it, I jumped further away from the street, then looked to see what was happening. A grey minivan started to pull over, and then sped away. I had my camera with me from taking pictures of Leif in his "I am 2 today!" shirt, and took a few pictures, but I didn't react quite fast enough, and you can't really see the car in either.
Luckily, he left his front license plate behind. Karma.
The driver of the other car was rather shaken, of course, but fine. Her car was pretty messed up, and they had to get a tow truck (there happened to be one right there on the scene - he'd taken off in chase of the other driver, but came back quickly after he lost him) to get it out of the intersection.
It was scary realizing that 30 seconds earlier, and I would have been in the intersection itself (I actually forgot about reading the newspaper headline, and thought I'd been in the last quarter of the intersection until about an hour afterwards, when seeing someone pour milk reminded me of the article). If Leif had been with me and had hesitated at all in the street, it could have been bad. Or, of course, it might have prevented it entirely, if there had actually been people in the crosswalk at the time.
Anyways, that's quite enough excitement for the day for me.
