May. 22nd, 2004 12:46 pmI've posted new pictures from April and May at http://www.ansible.org/~jess/leif/.
Leif is getting very big, and more capable every day!
His favorite thing at the moment is anything with wheels. He's crazy about strollers, and always goes crawling after other people's strollers when we're out. He enjoys pushing them around, either while crawling or, if they have the right design, walking.
He's still not walking on his own, but getting closer. He'll stand entirely unsupported for a minute or so until he realizes he's standing and sits down. It's frustrating to watch because it's obvious he knows how to do it, but he's not sure of himself.
His oral fixation is starting to be less pronounced. He looks through board books more than he eats them, and plays with the train set at Barnes & Noble instead of chewing on the trains (Hurray - I always felt weird taking him there, since he spent the whole time slobbering all over the trains!). He still loves carrying his toy rubber fish around in his mouth, however.
He still eats pretty much everything, but is starting to show more food preferences (he likes cherries better than zucchini, imagine that!) and is often suspicious of new food. If I manage to get it in his mouth so he can get a taste he'll generally eat it, but that's sometimes difficult since he only wants to feed himself!
He also loves feeding other people. If we give him finger food, he'll hold it up to our mouth so that we can take a bite.
He has his top two front teeth now. We went to the dentist the other day (for our appointments, not his) and they gave him a little child's toothbrush. I think we're going to have to get him an automatic toothbrush like ours, though - he seems to like them a lot better.
Correction - we just looked and he now has four top teeth. This comes as a bit of a surprise, since usually we see them coming for weeks ahead of time!
He's into everything. We can't keep anything near the edge of tables since he's tall enough to reach. We have to be careful to keep the toilet seat closed or he'll play with the toilet water (and then stick his hands in his mouth - yuck!). He's also discovered that it's great fun to pull on toilet paper!
We try to remember to keep the bathroom door closed these days.
We can't leave the screen door cracked open anymore because he's figured out how to open it and will go crawling away if we're not paying close attention, so dropping his toys out the door is no longer his favorite game. He's nearly figured out how to open the door when it isn't cracked, and I dread that day, since it's too hot to leave the glass door closed all the time.
We'll be coming back to California at the end of June - it didn't make sense to stay here with the high housing costs and unstable job market. We'll be visiting family all summer, so we'll probably get the chance to see a lot of you again! Leif is very happy to have his daddy around more now.
