Feb. 18th, 2007 10:22 pmOne of the funnest parts about having a kid is having an excuse to re-read books I loved as a child.
He's into chapter books now, which overall I find much more enjoyable than picture books. We started with Winnie The Pooh this past summer, which I wasn't sure he'd like with the somewhat arcane language, but he absolutely loved it.
Now we're about halfway through James and the Giant Peach, and I'm so excited about what we can read next. Should we stick with Roald Dahl and try Matilda? Or maybe Little House in the Big Woods? Or Mr. Popper's Penguins? So many choices...
He retains stuff, too. He doesn't always appear to be paying attention, but developed a fascination with spiders during Charlotte's Web, and tonight, he asked "What's that?", pointing to an apple stem. When I said it was a stem, he said "Like on a peach!".
(This is the child, by the way, who hated being read to as a baby, so we didn't. He would only briefly tolerate Goodnight Moon at 18 months. Don't believe the people who tell you that you must read to your child every day from conception on or they'll never enjoy books.)
