I feel so vindicated that Leif has started saying things like "Please", "Thank you", and "I'm sorry" entirely on his own without prompting.

I don't tell kids to use that language, I just always use it with them (isn't that how kids learn language?) when appropriate, and I do expect a reasonable tone of voice when making demands. I'll say, even (especially after someone says, "Can I PLEASE have the basketball?" in a very bossy tone), "I don't actually care if you say 'please,' but I'd like it to sound like you're not trying to boss me around." For some reason, I end up with more "please," but also, with more, "Can I have the basketball?" in very pleasant tones. I'm all about that. :)
