This morning I checked the weather, and commented that it was cold out (39F). Leif immediately jumped up and asked if he could wear his new shirt.

About a month ago, [livejournal.com profile] koyote bought him a long sleeved shirt, and I'd told him he could wear it when it was colder.

He has too good a memory.

I hate this shirt. It says "Chick Magnet" on it. [livejournal.com profile] koyote thinks it's hilarious because everyone always thinks Leif is a girl, so it's messing with society's gender/sexuality expectations and so forth. And anyonewho doesn't think it's funny doesn't have a good sense of humor.

On one hand, yes, I can see that. On the other, it's just wrong, and I'm embarrased to take him out in public dressed like that.

Unfortunately, he adores the shirt. Unfortunately, it's a little too warm to make him stick a sweatshirt over the top.

Thankfully, it looks like he'll grow out of it soon.

Turn it inside out?

It's designed to fake the appearance of a short sleeve shirt over a long sleeve shirt, so it has a long sleeve layer sewn into the sleeves (if that makes any sense), so that would look really really weird. Throwing a different short sleeve shirt over the top might work, if he'll let me.

You could also (in your copious free time, I know!) put a patch of something he likes better over the words, since it appears he's more a fan of the actual shirt anyway. I find myself more and more in agreement with mactavish all the time.

I find myself fiercely resistant to anything that has a tiny implication of sexualizing young kids, even something as "innocent" as that, or "future heartbreaker," or similar, in t-shirts or conversation.

I whole-heartedly agree with you.

really?! people think he's a girl? i mean he's got some longer hair, but i think he's got quite a boy's face. if that makes any sense. that's weird. there was a lady who shopped the co-op, and she had a little boy that people sometimes thought was a girl, but he had long flowy think hair, and bangs. gorgeous kid, but i can see him being mis-IDed as a girl, before Leif.

Heh...tell Leif it has an appointment in New Zealand and send it to me! I'd love a t-shirt with 'Chick Magnet' written on it!

he only one I actually liked was "These people are my relatives?"

I saw the "chick magnet" one and really didn't like it.. I don't know, I guess babies can be 'chick magnets'. People will probably think it is cute though. I think most people see it as cutesy, not as reinforcing gender roles per se. We love Leif's hair.. I wouldn't think he was a girl. I was wondering that the other day actually, just because of the long hair, if I saw him and didn't know would I know if he was a boy?, I think I would. I told Ted we'll have to let our little boys have long hair because it is so ca-ute. ;) LOL.. of course I feel weird about having my girls have long hair? Go figure.

Someone on my friend's list actually got her baby one on those onesies, or her husband did not sure, but she likes it, one that says "All Daddy wanted was a blow-job." I've also see women's ones like "I only wanted a back-rub", which is cuter, not as icky.

Oh my lord, I would be mortified by that one. Maybe around a select group of friends it would be funny.
