I was all smug about my cloth diaper washing when we lived in Virginia. I just did a cold rinse, a hot wash with normal detergent, and they were fine. Never any need to add anything, and never any stains or stinkiness.

That doesn't work here, I'm pretty sure because the water is a lot harder here. It kinda sucks. I don't really want to have to mess with adding baking soda and vinegar and all that. I guess I'll ask local moms what they do.

(I don't think I have anyone local on my friends list who actually washes their own cloth diapers, but if you do, feel free to contribute :)

I have this problem with my covers and it's what's holding me back right now from washing our own. I've done baking soda/vinegar washes, but scrubbing them with a paste of baking soda and rinsing with vinegar is the closest I've gotten to restoring them to their former glory. I certainly wouldn't want to do that with a bunch of diapers! Maybe post on the clothdiapering community? And if you find the answer for our water, I'd love to know the secret!

I asked on a local email list, and I'll be sure to pass on anything. I'm hoping for people who are experienced with the wonderful unique qualities of Davis water :) But if no one has any suggestions, I'll ask in the clothdiapering community.

And since I've been terrible about responding lately - going over to your place for dinner would be a nice change, and transportation isn't a problem at all. Pretty much any time except Friday and Sunday evenings works for us as long as we have at least a few days notice, except that my parents are visiting the next two weekends. Beyond that, pretty mmuch whatever works best for you. Thank you :)

Is there a local CD list?

As for dinner, let me check Mike's work schedule and propose a few dates. We'd love to have you guys!

Not that I know of - I tried moms_circle@yahoogroups.com. The one response so far suggests borax and white vinegar (no quantities specified), then line drying.

I didnt know about baking soda and vinegar as a cleaner when I was doing CDs. Any chance Oxyclean would work as it relies on a similar principle?

Yep, lots of people use oxyclean. I've just never tried it myself.

This might also be a topic to have a daviswiki page about, I am sure there are more local people facing the same thing who might have good solutions

This is the page I found about detergents:
http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm

And this is the one response I received from the mailing list:

i use white vinegar and borax in the wash
and that takes care of the smell
and i hang them out on the clothes line
and no matter how stained they looked to begin with
they end up bright white

I did with my son. I tried to keep a bucket with a lid in the bathroom. it had a little soap and water. I'd empty and rinse the diapers and dump them in the bucket to soak, sometimes with a little bleach.
