In short, person X said "wow, you guys use filters a lot" and person Y said " filters are so cliquish and when I see someone using them I assume they're talking shit about me" and I said "WTF?"
I use filters for both reading and posting. Some things I don't want out there to everyone, so I have a few security filters. I have a filter just for Howard so we can use LJ like a message board. I also have very specific filters like "Religion" and "PTSD" that people can opt in to since I know everyone doesn't want to read about those topics. I tend to use my filters for exploring things with a limited number of people and rarely for talking shit. If I have something to say, I say it.
answer for the firs few is Meh. People post what they will, I don't attach an emotion to posts I can't see. No context. Especially in the case of SO... no way to know what was going on, so don't worry about it.
I don't really use filters, I think I have one, and that was used to limit who could read/respond to a post where I was working out my feelings and didn't want the input of someone on my f-list.
Most of my posts are by default friends only. I sometimes forget when I'm posting via web though. Some things are Chad-filtered. I used to have roommate filters for household related stuff. I make more posts private than I do public. Conversations usually go private. I seldom use custom settings.
Depending on the person, I would assume note-to-self, note-to-geographically-or-other limited-group which I'm not in, or the like. If it were an SO, I'd probably assume either note-to-self or surprise-planning. I mostly use reading filters; for posting, I have a set of geographic filters, and have on rare occasions used tighter friends filters.
