At Picnic Day last week, we got some bags of ladybugs, which have been sleeping in the fridge since.

I got the bags out, and Leif asks if I found the others. The others?

It seems he brought some ladybugs in from outside to put them to sleep in the fridge so we could eat them.

[livejournal.com profile] silkensteel commented, "So that's why I've been finding ladybugs all over the kitchen."

We took them outside and let them go, after explaining that ladybugs don't really taste very good. Then we watched youtube videos about ants farming aphids, then relocated some of the ladybugs to the aphid infested tree and watched them happily munch away.

Ladybugs are *great* aphid control. A whole section of the yard last year was infected with the things... we released a container of ladybugs in the garden, and the aphids were completely gone (shells and all) within around 2 or 3 days. The yellow jackets had a ball with the aphid carcasses as well. :-)

sleeping in the fridge?? Is that like a euphenism?? Did they actual survive?? You can just put ladybugs in a bag and stick them in the fridge and they hibernate??? Mind boggling.

Yep. They hibernate in the fridge, and wake up within seconds of getting out. It's pretty cool.

Yes, pest control. And fun. They go in the fridge because it is best to release them in the early morning or evening. I have no idea how long they would last. Probably several months, since I assume that's how they survive the winter. We had them in there for a week with no problems.
