In Australia, they have these two candy bars, Violet Crumble and Crunchie. They're both "honeycomb" (this vaguely honey-flavored crunchy stuff. The closest comparison I've heard is to Astronaut Ice Cream) covered with chocolate. Every so often a fight breaks out on this mailing list I'm on over which one is better.

They happen to have a section of English/Aussie foods at our local grocery store. Why, I'm not entirely sure. The demand for vegemite, salad cream, and mushy peas can't be all that high. In any case, they carry both bars, so I decided to try them and decide for myself which is better.

(Actually, I've tried Violet Crumble before, but not Crunchie. Violet Crumble has a much more interesting name. Not that it has anything whatsoever to do with violets - it isn't purple, and doesn't taste like them (there is a candy that tastes like violets, though. Odd stuff, but kind of good.))

(Random side note: I'm apparently remembering random Hebrew words and trying to insert them into sentences. This is really odd, since I've never learned Hebrew.)

Neither of them really appeals to my taste, but I'd have to say that Violet Crumble is the more appealing of the two. Crunchie has more flavor, but the texture is strange. I'm wondering if mine may have been a bit off, because the honeycomb part was strange.

I'm trying to figure out what it is that the honeycomb is textured like. There's some other candy with a similar material, and I can't remember what it is. Why can I remember random Hebrew words, but not something that I've eaten before (and, I think, recently)? Arg...why can't I remember? *beats head against wall*

Malted Milk Balls...that's it. Figured out after doing a web search, and finding a site that says it tastes like you're eating a malted ball candy bar. Which is accurate, except that it's honey flavored instead of malt flavored. The texture is the same, though. The Crunchie bar reminded me of some malted milk balls I had that had gone stale or something, which is why I wondered if I'd gotten an off one.

This entry rivals my "ocelot is weird" entry in stupidity.

Yeah, if not kept really fresh, violet crumble and crunchie can be quite gooey. No fun at all really :)

It's so weird to hear non australians talking about australian things :)

Ok. I guess I'll give the Crunchies a second chance. It certainly isn't a fair comparison if the one I had really was off.

Do you like vegemite?

Vegemite is.. interesting, it used properly. It should be used VERY sparsely.. like, you shouldn't really see very much of it at all. I don't eat it more than once a year. It's just handy to know how to use it to make fun of foreigners ;) it's good on toast and dry crackers, spread thinly, and with margarine :)

I've heard this before, but I'm too scared to get a jar and try :)

I remember trying some at this Girl Scout thing way back, and it was nasty. I think it's at least partly anti-Australia propoganda, though, because no one who demonstrates it as an example of the funny things Aussies eat prepares it correctly.

I suppose I'm guilty of that as well for making fun of it here, despite knowing the proper serving technique and never actually having tried it.

We're just indoctrinated from a young age to make fun of vegemite. Gad, the US sucks :)
