Monday was my birthday, and also happened to be the day that the newest Orson Scott Card book, Shadow Puppets was released and his signing tour started. So, we headed down to Menlo Park, which happened to be the first stop on his tour.

We got there a little bit ahead of time, bought our copies of the books (one for each of us, and one for [livejournal.com profile] gdmusumeci who actually works in Menlo Park, but was stuck at a meeting), and stood in line. Because it was close to the time Mr. Card was supposed to start speaking, they gave those of us waiting in line tickets to get back into the line in approximately the same place after the talk.

The talk itself was interesting but frustrating, since there was some guy in a blue shirt standing directly in my line of sight, so I couldn't see anything. I'm mad at him, whoever he is.

Then we got back in line and waited for a while longer.

If you've never been to an Orson Scott Card book signing and are at all a fan of his work, I highly reccomend it (schedule for the current tour is here). He's an entertaining speaker, and makes the effort to be very friendly to his readers during the signing. We actually had a few minute conversation while he was signing the books. He actually remembered me! I wasn't going to say anything (I'd have felt weird saying "Hi, I'm one of the zillions of fans that's been to a signing before"), but he said he recognized my hair. This just about made my year, which proves what a silly fangirl I am. Anyways, both he and his wife remembered AnsibleMOO.

Perhaps this is normal for a book signing. I don't know. My only other book signing experience was with Ann M. Martin when I was about 10, which put me off the idea of book signings so much that I didn't go to another for about 10 years. Still, it seems like he makes a real effort to be friendly.

After the signing, we ate sushi and sat around reading for a few hours until [livejournal.com profile] gdmusumeci got off work. Then we ate thai food, picked up computer equipment, had some interesting conversations and drove him back to San Francisco before heading home extremely late (considering we had work and class the next day).

Gracias.

I realized the other day that I can still recite the pledge of allegiance in spanish.

Unfortunately, that's about all the spanish I remember.

The really strange part is that, if I don't think about it, I say "avec liberte" instead of "con libertad", which is really odd, since I can't remember anything else from the french version.

Happy happy birthday!
