Sep. 1st, 2002 09:26 pmThis weekend,
koyote and I are visiting my family in Southern California.
Yesterday was my cousin's wedding celebration. She's actually been married for a year, but didn't tell anyone till February. So they had the party at around the 1 year anniversary. There were still tons of people there, the majority from the groom's side of the family. Very loud, crowded, and generally overwhelming. Still, it was fun. I got to see a lot of relatives I haven't seen in years. I just wish there'd been more time to actually talk.
We stayed with my mom and stepdad up at their house in the mountains east of LA. Today, they through a party for the portions of the family that remained from the wedding party, as well as my step-siblings and their families. The weather was interesting - we had thunderstorms, which started fires nearby, so it rained mud for most of the party.
My little step-niece and nephew were there. Blake is 9 months old - I probably mentioned him in an entry around Christmas, when he was just a few days old. He's sure grown a lot. Megan is 6 months, and was still inside her mom last time I saw here (obviously). Both are terribly cute kids. Blake seems to be a very happy baby, babbling a lot, and walking (very shakily) with help. Megan was really pretty whiny most of the time, but I know she hadn't got enough sleep.
Even with both of them being little pains much of the time, I still want one. Be still, my biological clock! Being around my biological side of my Mom's family is probably healthier in that respect - only one has a kid, and he doesn't have custody of it. No feeling that I'm somehow behind for not already being married with a kid. (This is what you get with large mormon stepfamilies...)
Tomorrow we drive back up to Davis. The trip worked out really well in that regard.
koyote is driving a car across the country for friends (long story, which all of you for whom it would carry any relevance already know). They flew out of Orange County on Friday, leaving the car in the parking lot. We flew in Saturday, retrieved the car, and now have something to get us around down here and get us back up north. It couldn't have worked better if we'd planned it that way (not that planning didn't go into it, but a lot of the timing was very fortuitous).
I just wish I'd had time to go down to Coronado and visit my dad's side of the family. I was close to suggesting we change plans and go down there today instead of staying here. But this is what we'd planned, and it would have been really rude to back out at this point. I miss them, though, and I'm always afraid that one of them down there is going to die before I get to see them again. One of the cats at least - they're getting pretty old.
Oh well. There's always Thanksgiving.
Time to stop tying up the phone line...
