For a while now, I've been reading pregnant teen communities with kind of a sick fascination. Much of the time, it's like watching a train wreck. A number of the members can't even spell pregnant.

Something is seriously screwed with our educational system if kids bright enough to figure out LJ can't spell pregnant by the time they get their first period, let alone by the time they get pregnant.

Then again, the youngest mother ever was 5 years old. If they're that young, I'll excuse them for spelling it wrong.

And then you see someone who's 18, having her second child, and getting her Master's degree. Impressive.

Gee. Twisted and snarky are not valid LJ moods.

I'm going to be unpopular here and say that the idea of teen pregnancy doesn't really bother me. The role teens play and the way they are treated in our society bothers me. But that's another (though related) rant.

That's not to say I think all teens should be rushing out and getting pregnant. In our society they do have a tendency not to be ready. Pregnant teens who can't spell pregnant, or who just plain act immature, scare me. But people who aren't teens who act similarly scare me equally (though I have to admit, I don't think I've seen anyone misspell pregnant outside the teen communities).

And I do think that the European style of sex ed would be better. Knowing the facts about sex, contraceptives, etc. and getting over the whole "babies are so cute and I'll have someone to love me unconditionally forever and ever!!!!!!" junk is never a bad thing.

The reason teen pregnancy bothers me is because of the roll teens play, etc. And because it tends to be a result of irresponsibility more than anything else. And then we get into the bell curve issues of it all...
