Mar. 21st, 2007 07:39 pmWe took the creative route to and from San Diego this time, partially to avoid the bus over the Grapevine, partially for variety/better scenery.
On the way there - train from Davis to San Jose, bus from San Jose to San Luis Obispo, train from SLO to LA, and different train from LA to San Diego. We left at 7AM and got in at 1AM.
On the return trip - Coaster from San Diego to Oceanside to meet
jtersesk (note for future: this is significantly cheaper than Amtrak between these two stations, especially if one of the people is a child between 2 and 5), train from Oceanside to Santa Barbara. 5 hour layover in SB. Overnight bus to Oakland. Train to Davis.
In comparison, the central valley route takes about 9 hours total, and is slightly more expensive.
The trip there - eh...I think we'll stick with the central valley. It takes the whole day, and gets in late enough that we aren't really functional until afternoon the next day. Leif is too cooped up being on either a train or bus the whole time, and the only stop where he really has time to run around at all is the San Jose stop, which is still early enough in the trip that he doesn't truly need it yet.
I liked the trip back though, and think that, overall, it was easier on Leif, with so much of the time spent asleep. Neither
koyote nor I slept particularly well, but
koyote would have done better without a broken toe and sinus infection. Without the stop in Oceanside, we can leave relatively late in the day. In the summer, when it's warmer and the sun is out later, the stopover in SB will be really nice. Other times of year, we can catch the later train that connects directly to the bus.
Ideally, I think we'd fly there and train back, but the plane is much more expensive (since kids over 2 require full price tickets - it actually isn't that much more expensive for adults if you plan far enough in advance).
