You know that ringtone that adults can't hear that kids are using to send text messages during class?

I listened to the mp3 and thought maybe it was just a blank hoax file, until Leif asked "What's that noise?"

That's so bizarre. I was hoping someone would have an MP3, thanks!
I could hear it just a little...although it probably just woke Owen up, heh.

Try reloading and playing it again - I tried it a number of times without hearing anything, then tried playing it for a friend and heard a relatively low pitched tone. When I reloaded again, it went back to being something I couldn't hear.

Nope, comes through nice and clearly as a high pitched tone.

I'm a genetic freak :(

yeah same here. I clicked and went ACK, turn it down! I find that amazing that other people can't hear it.

It could well be genetic.

I can hear it clearly. My grandfather and I could hear the "active alarm" systems used in banks in the 80s. They played a tone that, if it disappeared, would cause the alarm system to activate. While I'm not 100% sure how it worked, I know that we weren't supposed to hear it, but we could. Apparently so could babies and small children and they've since changed the systems.

I can hear it. It's painful. But interestingly enough, only in my right ear.

Weird. LJ logged me out. Anyway, the anonymous comment was me. I could hear it every time but Bree could really hear it.

I'm 28, and I could hear it. It actually sounds like my ears are ringing, only more annoying, almost like it causes pressure/pain, too.

OTOH, if I were in a crowded room, I don't think I'd notice it or if I did, I wouldn't think it was a cell phone.

Seriously - that is the most annoying noise.

But I don't think it's an age thing, so much as a hearing thing...
Because pushing 40 here, that is patently obvious to me and downright painful.

If one of my students used it, I'd say "Good lord what is that noise? turn that off!"

Chances are you wouldn't hear it.. as I understand it, much like low frequency radio waves can travel insanely long distances, high frequency sound drops off very quickly.

And you also probably wouldn't be able to triangulate its location due to the short period of the sound.

These kids today are pretty clever ;)

Though

I could hear it, and it made my ears hurt. Blahh what a crazy thing! I have to play it for the man when he gets home. Im pretty sure hes deaf, gonna check that out lol :)

I'm pretty good at hearing high pitched sounds. I heard a high-pitched, faint, whispery whoosh. In a quiet room I'd think it annoying, but background sounds will drown it out.

(And yet I can hear the most annoying sounds many people can't.)

Ow I heard that and it made my eyes water. Did I read that right - they are using it to keep teens out of malls or something? What about babies and toddlers and small children? That was a most unpleasant noise.

Coworkers were playing around with that when I came in this morning. I couldn't hear it from about 10 feet away, but when I got closer and they stared playing it, I screamed in pain and cowered in fear.

I've always been able to hear freakishly high-pitched noises...

Back when we were in Virginia, we ran into eachother in a restaurant once. I recognized her from your friends list (the hair is kind of distinctive), and later she figured out who I was.

That's amazing :)

I used to catch the bus home with [livejournal.com profile] seraphim_muso.. I eventually realised who she was from seeing pictures in her sister's ([livejournal.com profile] laruth) livejournal. Her sister friended me because I was a perth geek, like her.

To this day, I've never met her sister

THe existence of the tone is unquestionable -- it was publicized as a crowd control thing a while back, stores playing to so teens wouldn't hang out. But the question I've seen raised on the ringtone is whether cell speakers are capable of reproducing it. Some say no.

I believe it exists, I just wasn't sure if this particular file was for real (though I suppose NPR isn't really the type to put up hoaxes :)

I can't hear it. Must be from dancing on top of too many amps in my 20's.

OW. I can totally hear it. Funny though, about halfway through I have to really try to hear. Why? Because it's the same dmaned noise that is in my ears all the god damned time(sorry for the language, but this upsets me!). I have permanent tinnitus and a lot of the time it sounds just like that. I've learned to tone it out, mostly.

if you listen with good speakers or good headphones, you can hear it. at least, i could. but not with shitty speakers. i think it's just because of the high range the frequency is in.
